01 / Overview
A welcoming starting point.
Developed by Canonical and its community, Ubuntu is one of the best-known Linux distributions. It builds on Debian, adds its own release process and tooling, and serves everything from personal laptops to cloud infrastructure.
What makes it stand out
- An accessible desktop experience and extensive getting-started documentation.
- Long-term support releases for people who prefer a predictable foundation.
- A broad ecosystem of applications, tutorials, hardware vendors, and hosting providers.
Who is it for?
New Linux users, developers, and people who want a widely documented desktop or server platform.
The trade-offs
Ubuntu includes opinionated choices, including Snap integration. If you prefer a minimal system or a different application packaging approach, you may want to customize it or explore an alternative.
